Debraj Roy College came into being in the wake of independence of the country around 1949. This premier institutions of higher education may be regarded as the brain child of Ajyodhya Prasad Goswami, who was then a student leader, Sankar Ch. Baruah, a leader of the freedom movement, Golap Ch. Goswami, Dr. Promodaviram Das, Jadunath Saikia etc. The college was started on 1st September, 1949, This was the first college in the district (then a sub-division of undivided Sibsagar district) and born out of necessity and out of the awareness infused by the national freedom movement. Till 1965 the college was affiliated to Guwahati University. In 1965, the Govt. of Assam by an act, brought the college under Dibrugarh University along with other leading College in Upper Assam Districts. Now, it is a full fledged degree college and offers students the facilities for studies in science and humanities. The present enrollment of the college is around 2700 (excluding private and casual students). The College celebrated Silver Jubilee of its foundations in the year 1974 and Golden Jubilee in the year 1998-99. Fitly Three years of its relentless and dedicated service to the field of higher education was duly recognized by NAAC with grade (institutional score 81%). The college celebrated the year 2009-10 as the Diamond Jubilee Year of its foundation. In March, 2010 UGC in Phase-III of XI Five Year Plane selected our College as College with Potential for Excellence (CPE). In January 2011, NAAC Reaccredited our institutions with A-Grade with an institutional score of 3.11 (CGPA).

The College was selected as college with potential for Excellence (CPE) for second term under 12th plan period of UGC in 2014, thus becoming the second college under affiliating university and now remains one of the only three premier colleges of Assam to achieve such recognition for grant successful.
